Family Services

Mental illness is not an isolated phenomenon; it affects the individual as well as the networks and communities they're part of.

At Chicago Behavior Therapy, we acknowledge the impact mental illness can have on relationships and the people surrounding the individual. Friends, family, and loved ones often grapple with how to provide meaningful support, communicate effectively, and navigate these challenges while also caring for their own emotional well-being.

Through our Family Services, we provide a supportive environment where people can learn, grow, and better understand the complexities of the mental health conditions affecting their loved ones. This service is designed to offer training, guidance, and support for those seeking compassionate, thoughtful, and effective strategies to connect and communicate with loved ones who are experiencing mental health struggles.

Parent Consultation

Supporting a child or adult child grappling with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) or emotional dysregulation can be a complex and challenging journey. These individuals often struggle to perceive and respond flexibly to their surroundings, leaving parents in what can feel like an impossible situation where every action seems to exacerbate the issue.

Parent Consultation aims to equip parents with the understanding and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of supporting a child with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) or emotional dysregulation effectively. This coaching approach fosters a deeper understanding persistent problematic behaviors, allowing parents to recognize how they might be inadvertently maintained and reinforced over time.

Through Parent Consultation, you'll learn about the patterns of reinforcement, gain deeper insights into the function of your child's behaviors, and collaboratively develop an individualized strategy on how to respond, communicate, and express support for your child effectively. You'll receive an understanding of the interventions at a theoretical level, fostering an ability to conceptualize and respond to your child's behaviors in a flexible and personalized way, rather than strictly adhering to a rigid treatment plan.

This is most effective for parents of children aged 13 and up who are actively engaging in therapy. This service is particularly beneficial for parents grappling with issues such as:

  • Self-harm and suicidal ideation

  • Substance abuse

  • Challenges with school attendance

  • Difficulties with self-initiation or progression towards independence

  • Chronic disputes within the home

  • Potentially dangerous and impulsive behaviors

Our goal with Parent Consultation is to help you navigate this challenging terrain with greater confidence and effectiveness, ultimately fostering healthier dynamics within your family.
